Japan: Day 6

Our hotel is perfectly located between three combinis, which is good because for some reason we were feeling picky for breakfast.  Luckily, I was able to find that Curry Cheese Bun that I love so much at one and Deb finally got her smoothie at another.

Then we took three wrong trams before finally getting on the correct one heading towards Miyajima, an island just a ferry ride away from Hiroshima.

Miyajima is home to the Grand Torii Gate, a large orange gate that, during high tide, looks like it's floating in water. I have to admit that seeing it from the ferry was somewhat underwhelming but once we were right up next it on land it looked much more cool.

I really loved Miyajima - it was blocks of cute shops and street food. They had just about any kind of food you can imagine (and some you most certainly can't) on a stick. I never did get that chocolate dipped banana though 😞. We did, however, get to pet some wild deer (who were clearly well-fed by tourists) and spend a bunch of money!

Knowing that we had to get up early tomorrow to catch a shinkansen back to Tokyo, we decided to head back to Hiroshima for some extra night on the town before calling it a night.

Okay, before I go on I need to explain something: The Japanese fashion is INCREDIBLE. The way these ladies dress is so beautiful and tasteful that I've never seen anything like it. Feeling inspired, Debbie and I ended up buying matching outfits (no, we have no intention of wearing them at the same time or place!). Yes, not only can I say that I went to Japan with my daughter's best friend, but we went shopping together and bought matching outfits. We laugh hysterically about it and the fact that it should be super weird but for some reason isn’t.

For dinner we decided to step WAY out of our comfort zone. Well, it wasn't intentional but it ended up being that way. We walked into a random restaurant and the first thing we noticed was that we were supposed to take off our shoes. Okay, easy enough. They had lockers but we just shoved them in our bags. Then we were told that there would not be an English menu. M'kay, we'll find a way. We were led to some interesting seating (difficult to explain except that we were eating at floor level but not quite) and handed an iPod to order with. Using Google Lens we were mostly able to figure out what we wanted but it was mostly press and pray. Debbie's came out with a raw egg (she was mortified but ended up eating it). My entire dish came out raw and I had to cook it myself with a skillet and a frying pan but it was all incredible!  Afterwards we were super happy that we had the experience.

Okay, I should put this down and go to bed. Tomorrow is going to be a crazy day of more train stations with dragging heavy suitcases up large stairwells...but super excited because not only do we get to see Jonah again, but tomorrow is Debbie's 21st birthday and we're going to an owl cafe in Akihabara (Tokyo's anime district)!

Seriously, I assumed that Mr Donut died nearly four decades ago but is apparently alive and well in Japan.

I have no idea what this place is...noise hair?

Found these (they're real, in case you're wondering) in Daiso of all places

I love Japanese fashion!

Quick note: Those yellow sidewalk lines are throughout Japan and are like Braille for vision impaired people to be able to safely navigate the streets. Cool, eh??

Stepping out of our comfort zone...

Deb's food (don't ask us what except that it was chicken with a raw egg)

My dinner before

My dinner after. It was beef, onion, and cabbage something or other

We get a lot of free stuff from our hotels like toothbrushes, toothpaste, hair brushes, razors, and some really cool disposable wash cloth things. There are usually bins of these kind of goodies in the lobbies. I'll try to remember a picture tomorrow. But 'hair band' made me laugh more than it should.
